Gas fires, for effect and heat

Welcome to our Gas Fire page

It's great coming home to a real coal fire in winter, but they can be time consuming, especially if you have kids , or both of you are working. This is where the "flame effect" gas fire comes into it's own. By ordering  them direct over the internet to your home, you get them for a fraction of the cost of shop prices. Our family have been involved in fireplace installation and renovation since 1968 and gas trays for most of that time. By having the gas tray made specifically for your fireplace opening, results are so realistic , that people often throw cigarette butts into the coals thinking it is a genuine fire!

Follow these four simple steps and you'll have a flame effect fire, built to fit your existing fireplace in no time.

Step 1

For us to make your gas fire, we need to know the shape of the opening of your fireplace. Here is an example of an opening cleared to allow a gas fire to be inserted. The craftsman has already laid the pipe work that will supply gas to the fire.

The picture above shows the fireplace with the grill removed as you will have to do. Now, get a piece of newspaper and scissors and place paper in opening. Delicately cut paper until a template of the opening space is made. Leave about 6 mm all the way around to ensure the gas kit will easily slide into the opening.

In reality, your opening would have front bars in place.

It is crucial that the front bars are taken into the calculation. Here is a "bird's eye" view of the template you should make, it's marked in blue.

Once you have your template, mark it like so:

Write "Front" along the  side closest to you, nearest the front bars.

Step 2

Find out the total height of the gas kit. The height we require is the distance from the ground, to the height of the first bar on your front bars. It is easily calculated with a ridged school ruler.

The tray is especially manufactured for your fireplace opening. Don't worry if the grill is still in place while you prepare your template, it can be easily removed before installing the new coal effect fire.

Step 3

Now choose your gas fire design, there are two types, "The Classic" & "The Genesis"

"The Classic"

Ideal for smaller openings, but is less efficient. The gas controls are immediately underneath the tray. The tray itself is filled with a silicon weave which is not combustible and the coals sit on top of this trapped behind the front bars. The effect is almost indistinguishable from the real thing. The trick here is to ask your fitter to just prod a long handled screwdriver into the silicon creating thin channels for which the gas can escape and thus designed the flames for best overall effect.

If all you need is something purely decorative then this less expensive kit will suite you.

The Classic costs just

£148.93 +vat

£174.99inc. vat + £9.40 p&p UK

"The Genesis"

Has radiant bars built in and is really for the larger openings. This model is something like 60% efficient and is a "must have" if higher heat levels are required.

This model is more elaborate than the "CLASSIC", the controls are still immediately underneath the fireplace but radiant bars are carefully covered in varying sizes of coal, covering up the radiant array to the naked eye. The flame is a more natural red colour too but the minimum size for this model is bigger than the "CLASSIC" so there will be some situations in smaller openings where the "CLASSIC" is your only choice.

The Genesis costs just

£195.74 +vat

£229.99inc. vat + £9.40 p&p UK

CLASSIC or GENESIS?

Step 4

The present law states that if the gas fire is below 7 kw and the draw on your flue is sufficient, you do not have to have a vent in the room. Gas Kits  under 7 kw however, are mostly decorative, but if you have central heating in the room then this is irrelevant so you have to decide which model you require.

Vent or no Vent?

Here is the finished product, Ash pan covers can be bought placed to conceal the knob making the overall effect as realistic as possible.

Send the template to us is by fax or by post. If the template is too big you could fold it in half, draw the outline on a piece of A4 then indicate the side you folded by marking it 'mirror'. Remember to include all the relevant details in the fax then we will phone you to confirm details.

Summary

1. Mark "Front" & Mirror on template where necessary.
2. Work out overall tray height.
3. Your address, telephone number, and choice of gas fire.
4. Vent or No vent (under / over 7 kw)

If you do require a vent and you have wooden floorboards, and there is underfloor ventilation provided by airbricks to the undefloor space. A brass floor vent with a permanently open 100 sq cms of ventilation is often the best way to go as a direct wall vent can be very overpowering if a black hole vent hasn't been put in the wall.

These vents are easy to install and make your fire legal. They are just £24.99 inc VAT.
